Trinity produces a number of products under the Altiplus™ label for use in the plastics industry.  They are macro crystalline, high aspect ratio platelets offering excellent reinforcement properties to mineral filled polyolefin, TPO`s, TPE`s, Nylon and a number of engineering resin systems.

In polypropylene resin, minerals which have a “platy” particle morphology, i.e. those having a high aspect ratio, are classified as reinforcement fillers.  They are compounded into the resin matrix to improve the properties of injection molded parts–specifically improving the stiffness, (rigidity) and tensile strength, impact resistance and resistance to temperature change.

Our Altiplus™ product is inert, soft and “platy”.  It also possesses a very high and dry brightness ranging from 92-95 depending on particle size.  This makes it ideal for natural and colour sensitive applications.  Our high purity ores are hydrophobic, nonabrasive and contain low iron oxide levels (0.2 max), as well as low calcium levels (0.02 max) for improved dimensional and UV stability.

Altiplus™ contains approximately 92% pure pyrophyllite and 8& white muscovite mica, making it an ideal reinforcement additive for filled and reinforced plastics.  As a hydrous aluminium silicate, Altiplus™ contains the same monoclinic “platy” structure as talc and belongs to the same mineral family as talc.  The two minerals have similar physical properties, high chemical resistance and low electrical conductivity. Other similar properties include:

  • Increased stiffness (flexural modulus)
  • Improved dimensional and heat stability
  • Improved heat deflection

Finer grades used in TPO`s for automotive and appliance applications offer improved impact resistance.  It can also be used as an antiblocking agent in LLDPE, LDPE and polypropylene films and offers excellent barrier properties in BMC and Polyester gel coats.

Altiplus™ 1045 is a coarser grade with a median particle size of 9-10 microns and can be used in polyolefins where improved stiffness, dimensional stability, tensile strength, heat distortion temperatures, reduced shrinkage and excellent colour are required.

Altiplus™ 645 and 445 are median sized grades used in performance polyolefin applications requiring good colour in the filled polymer. They further enhance the flexural of modulus (stiffness) impact resistance and HDT. The platy structures of these products offer excellent barrier properties in polyester gel coats and BMC.

Altiplus™ 225 is a fine grade (median 2 micron) with exceptionally high dry brightness of 95, used in automotive TPO`s and engineering resin systems where high mechanical properties sich as impact resistance and stiffness are required. They are used for antiblocking in polyethylene, restore mechanical properties to recycled plastics and are ideal nucleating agents in biopolymers and semi-crystalline polymers.
